But God...

"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience - among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.  But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved - and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
                                                                       - Ephesians 2:1-10

It's a small, two-word, transitional phrase.  But those two words in many ways are the foundation on which all my hope and faith rest.

Pastor VanDyke made a connection between that passage and 1 Corinthians 15:16-22 on Easter morning:

"For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.

"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."

i love those 2 words too, amazing how a 2 word phrase like that can have so much significance. i remember Peter Boyd emphasising them when he preached on this passage :)

I've preached all of 3 sermons in my life, one of them on this passage. I wanted to call it "The Ultimate Power But", but since it was in a PCA church...Anyway, those two words are The Gospel in Two Words. The best news anybody could ever hear.
