first night of class

Last night was the first night of class for the course I'm teaching at Grace Theological College. GTC is  a non-denominational, evangelical and reformed college committed to training and equipping men and women to serve the Church in New Zealand.

Over the next two terms I'm teaching a course called Engaging Cults and New Religious Movements.  We had about ten students show up which is pretty good and was more than I was expecting.  There were good questions asked and we had some good discussions.  Nobody threw anything at me and I'm pretty sure I didn't put anyone to sleep so overall I think things are off to a good start.

Ah, you have a classroom! I'm so excited for you, Brooke, Sophia, your students, any one else you might meet. I'm praying for you guys. Sorry we didn't really get to say goodbye! Love you all.

Dude, this is awesome! I'm curious, though, of two things: 1) What books make up the stack to the left of the "lecturn" and 2) what is L&P soda that the student on the far right in the photo is drinking?

will,

l&p is an awesome NZ soda that's sorta like ginger ale but more lemony than gingery. i love the stuff.

as for the books, they are the required texts for the course:
Doctrine Twisting - House and Carle, very basic review of orthodox christianity with comparison and response to various distortions.
A Guide to New Religious Movements - Enroth, provides brief overviews of several groups. decent text.
Encountering New Religious Movements - Hexham (and several others that i can't remember off the top of my head), excellent book that lays down solid philosophical and methodological foundation for approaching NRM's on a missiological basis. the second half of the book is al very practical discussion of reaching different groups.

the last book in the pile is martin's kingdom of the cults which is only a recommended resource. i had it there to discuss why we weren't using it as a text. mainly, it's to combative and pejorative to inspire true engagement.

in answer to your question on the previous post; yes, kiwi's know what the bird is. :-)

good to hear from you bro.

Hi Travis,

Couple of questions; who's that incredibly handsome guy in the red t-shirt? and were you disappointed that nobody threw anything at you? I know that throwing shoes is all the rage at the moment, but I'm usually wearing jandals at this time of year and I'm not sure if that's quite as effective.

On a serious note... It was a great class, very clear presentation and very inspiring content, thanks alot.

I'm really excited for you guys. It was so nice to see you right before you left STL and it's great to see pictures of where you're teaching and to hear how that's going so far. Is it wrong to be slightly jealous of everyone in T-Shirts as I'm shaking from the cold in our apartment?
